The party, to celebrate DJ Chelsea Leyland as SHK's latest cover girl, drew downtown hipsters who were ready to party hard! Jean Shafiroff and Rose Hartman

It was a year ago, November, that the artistically edgy, long time photographer Rose Hartman held her initial showing of classic black and white photos via an exhibit in NYC, entitled "Incomparable Women of Style". Hartman's black and white photos of yesteryear are now on the printed page via an exquisite coffee table book bearing the same name. This past Tuesday, November 13th, a book signing for "Incomparable Women of Style" took place at Haven, the rooftop lounge of Midtown West's Sanctuary Hotel, welcoming a stellar crowd.

The evening was an instant success. The savvy Ms. Hartman enlisted friend and philanthropist, Jean Shafiroff (whom Hartman has done several commissioned portraits of), to host the first official signing of her book. Ever wonder what might be in fashion 25, 50, or even 100 years from now when some of our most leading edge technologies are built right into what we wear?

When I wrote my novel, Glide, I was confronted with the challenge of creating a character who was not only a genius but THE genius inventor of the next century. For us non-geniuses and genius-wannabes it’s tough enough to imagine the kinds of thoughts a true genius might have, but it’s even tougher to translate those thoughts into realistic inventions. Still, it’s a lot of fun to think about. Kind of like imagining life forms on other worlds.

I had another parameter to work with. I wanted the inventions to be “green.” I’m one of those crazy authors who believes that Art Inspires Life just as much as Life Inspires ... Read More

I joined a group of illustrious art collectors, dealers and aficionados at the Art Show VIP gala, organized by the Art Dealers Association of America, at the Park Avenue Armory. The Art Show looked especially elegant this year, because of its carefully-chosen range, from 19th and 20th century masterpieces, to cutting- edge art works. Metro Pictures showed Cindy Sherman's handcut black and white collages (featuring Sherman playing 13 different Hollywood-style characters), a striking counterpoint to her enormous color prints on view at MOMA.

The first, a benefit for the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation, featured a star-studded lineup of Broadway actors who sang and danced ( “Billy Elliott’s” star Tade Biesinger mesmerized the audience at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.As an admirer of the legendary, soulful Roberta Flack, I was especially delighted to see her honored with the organization’s first Ambassador of the Arts award. In addition, $50,000 in college scholarships raised for promising dancers made the evening even more memorable. Bravos to Cassandra Seidenfeld Lyster and Robin Cofer, who co-chaired the event, which ended in a lively champagne reception!!!

Last weekend, I joined a bevy of collectors and art aficionados who East Hampton’s famed Guild Hall museum, to celebrate Richard Prince’s exhibit “Covering Pollack”. Using black and white images of ... Read More

On Saturday, August 13th Caitlin and John Tashjian hosted the 5th annual “Hamptons Hoedown” at their home in East Hampton to celebrate Caitlin’s 40th birthday. Guests sported their best western duds and rode dueling mechanical bulls, played beer pong, and danced under tent decorated with red, white and blue lanterns. The hotly-contested annual “bull riding championship” was won by Liv Odegard, a native Texan, who used her Lonestar State riding skills to take home the Hoedown Trophy. Guests dined on a southern hoedown menu featuring pulled pork barbecue, ribs, smoked sausages and fried chicken all prepared by barbecue pit-master Rich Chinitz. After wishing Caitlin a happy birthday with a beach-themed cake, John (DJ Tash) took his place behind the turntables and spun tunes as guests danced the night away.

My recent trip to London was nothing less than memorable, from dinner on exuberant Zandra Rhodes' terrace in the East End, to photographing and lunching with the delightful Lady Kingsley (wife of the legendary Ben Kingley) in their charming Spelsbury home (unfortunately, Sir Kingsley was in NY shooting his latest film), catching a Yohji Yamamoto retrospective at the V&A, seminal images of Hungarian photographers (Capa, Brassai, etc.) at the Royal Academy, Toulouse-Lautrec at the Courtauld, Cy Twombly at Tate Modern (highlighted by a small glass vase of white roses to memorialize his passing), securing the last ticket to an Arnold Wexler play at the Royal Court theatre, visiting the witty and brilliant hat designer Stephen Jones in his exquisite boutique, strolling through historic Brick Lane with its sari-filled Indian shops and endless restaurants, enjoying delectable guinea fowl in a quintessential English pub, visiting privately-owned 187-room Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire ... Atmosphere at the 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse

1224 Scuttlehole Rd. in Bridgehampton is the location for the 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse. The Gala Preview Cocktail Party took place on Saturday, July 23rd, a perfect summer evening. The presenting sponsor was Traditional Home and all proceeds are set to benefit the Southampton Hospital in Southampton, New York.

This year's showhouse is a 12,000 ft. newly constructed residence designed with a distinct 'south of the highway feel'. It is situated on an oversized 2.4 acre parcel overlooking expansive protected reserves and horse riding fields. Mindful of the pristine state of the property, guests were whisked to the grounds by shuttle bus. Upon arrival, they were given full access to the 7 bedroom suites, 9 full baths, 3 half baths, a 2 story living room, and a traditional Bakes and Company kitchen, with butler's pantry. What better way is there to spend a gala evening than joining photo collectors, art dealers, former ICP recipients and this year's ICP honorees at the Chelsea Piers? I especially enjoyed meeting 99-year-old photojournalist Helen Gruber and lifetime achievement ICP Infinity Award winner Elliott Erwitt, who has focused his camera on Che Guevara, Marilyn Monroe and all those canines for six decades.

Even if you weren't lucky enough to get a ticket for the sold-out benefit, photo lovers should dash over to the ICP to enjoy Erwitt's huge, black and white retrospective, aptly entitled "Elliott Erwitt: Personal Best", along with Gruber's color images of Alaska's natives and Jewish communities throughout the world.

Even the most blase passerby will be delighted by the shimmering installation viewed only from the outside of the Roger Smith Hotel. Paris-based artist Anne Ferrer has created five brilliantly-colored, giant, hand-blown sculptures that breathe, billow, grow and evolve in slow motion to the lighter-than-air music of L.A.-based composer Carol Worthey.

Bravo both to freelance curator Ed Rubin and the LAb for their invitations to a versatile group of artists who transformed 47th St. and Lexington into a magical space.

In addition, the post-viewing was followed by a private dinner, highlighted by stimulating conversation, endless wine, pasta and salad.

While Cuba certainly has its challenges (I was fortunate enough to spend a week in Havana visiting amazingly resilient artists), even with its impoverishment, there is a tremendous amount of artistic activity. That range of talent is encapsulated in "Living In Havana", a talented five artist exhibition at Chelsea's Marlboro gallery through June 18th.

We were especially moved by Kcho's work, that revolved around the provocative theme of desperate migration. Guests of the Marlboro gallery celebrated the exhibition with mojitos and dinner at Havana Central.

The Latins certainly know how to party! Last night, some 600 fun-loving internationals put on their dancing shoes to attend the Museo del Barrio's annual gala. No one loves to dine out in a scene restaurant more than I. One of my favorites is the Lion, where four of my archival photos are prominently displayed, Another is the charming Waverly Inn, where Pierce Brosman and Cindy Lauper once waited patiently for their tables.

However, there are those occasional evenings when a relaxing seafood dinner without attitude is just the thing. Recently, I discovered the Mussel Pot on Bleecker Street. In a rock garden, highlighted by a soothing waterfall, I enjoyed good conversation, a tower of succulent seafood, an oversized pot of Thai mussels (with red curry, lemongrass, cilantro, coconut milk and couscous) and a delectable crème brûlée.

As everyone knows, the enjoyment of any meal is enhanced by where you're seated in a restaurant. So, imagine how delighted my friends and I were in this setting of alpine rocks and and waterfall...without leaving the city!

When I attended the fledgling fashion show of the provocative Alexander McQueen at the Angel Orensanz Foundation on the lower east side one snowy evening, little did I know that he would become one of the world's most renowned designers.

Sadly, McQueen recently took his life at age 40, leaving behind endless radical creations. Run, do not walk, to the Met's Costume Institute to view over 100 works and mind-altering accessories from the the early 1990's to his very last collection. While his London fashion house is in the capable hands of the very private Sarah Burton, few will ever forget such masterpieces as a glass-vitrine encased gown covered with silk and fresh flowers (that are slowly disintegrating) or a flowing silk taffeta cape or a hat of butterflies.

As his fellow design student Stella McCartney remarked at the Met's press conference, "Who would have thought?"

The exhibition closes on July 31st.

Held in a striking Upper East Side mansion, formerly the home of diplomat Jock Whitney, I joined other design enthusiasts who clearly believe that New Yorkers' true obsession is interior design. Celerie Kemble transformed a dark paneled library into a glimmering "Sanctuary for a Siren" and Amanda Nisbet created a charming bedroom highlighted by Marilyn Minter's luscious photo "framing" the bed.

And it is good to know that each $30 ticket helps Kip's Bay support after-school programs for young Bronxites. (closes May 26, 2011).

If you haven't visited Urban Zen yet, you are in for a treat. Located on a quiet West Village street, the store/gallery was established by Donna Karan.

Hand-crafted Balinese furniture, gorgeous exotic jewelry (like the pieces that Donna always wears), oversized art books and, of course, all those neutral linen and jersey must-haves (for those with money to spare) to entice Karan's many fans.

What distinguishes this space are the exceptional events that take place in the enormous, former sculpture studio of Donna's late husband, Stephen Weiss.

The second, eponymously-named, Crystal Castles record is amazing. The duo, who hail from the great city of Toronto, have taken their music to another level. This mixture of pop, electro, goth and just plain noise is a perfect soundtrack for 2011, even though it was recorded in 2010. My favorite tracks, "Empathy" "Vietnam" and "Intimate", are danceable, yet chill enough for a lazy Sunday afternoon. While most bands today sound like rip-offs of other eras, "Crystal Castles" keeps it original. Score one for the music scene of TO. Martha Graham Dance Company celebrated the opening of its 85th Anniversary Season on Tuesday evening, March 16th, at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater. The stellar performance was a sight to behold. While photography was not allowed during the performance for obvious reasons, the imagery remains emblazoned in the minds of those fortunate enough to attend.

Robert Wilson's "Snow on the Mesa" (1995) flowed into "Maple Leaf Rag" (a 1990 Martha Graham original), working as an interesting combination. Drawing the viewer in was Wilson's effortlessly executed personal portrait of Martha Graham. In "Snow on the Mesa", Wilson reflects many aspects of Graham's persona, her interest in early America and the Shakers, her love for nature and the MidWest, her interest in Colin McFee and Balinese dance and, lastly, her interest in Western myths and Asian culture.

REMEMBERING JOAN

There is a fairytale aspect to fashion as every fresh Fashion Week spotlights bevies of new, young designers hoping, as is proper, for fortune and fame in return for their genius and hard work. This year, the charming proliferation of long, comfy, hand-made looking sweaters over dresses and tights reminded me of the “rags to riches’ story of an old friend who pioneered similar styles thirty years ago and died last month on January 9th.

It was the late Seventies. I was, perhaps, 20, just out of Bryn Mawr and the surreal experience of living in Katherine Hepburn’s old suite in Pembroke East on the second floor next to the dining room. Nothing had prepared me for my first job in the New York fashion office of Neiman Marcus, or life in the Big Apple at that time of Studio 54 and Halston, Bianca and Liza defining American ...
